Jen s abduction, but also the murder of Maria Espinosa and so many others.
He d pay for ruining the lives of young people, their addiction to heroin making
them pay the ultimate price, so that he could line his pockets.
The NCPD was happy, the district attorney was happy.
Derek was happy, too, for word got out, and Gray s was busier than ever.
Jen breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that no one was harmed, glad that Derek s
business had taken off.
Of course, so had Travis. She hadn t seen him at all after that fateful day Manuel
Sanchez was brought to justice.
The summer went by as fast as it came, and now, two weeks into September, Jen
walked the sandy beach where just a few weeks before, bathers and volleyball nets dotted
the shore. It was still warm, and the sand felt good between her bare toes.
She walked the deserted beach everyday after work in the hopes that she could
erase the memory of Travis
At least Luck had smiled down on her in the form of a permanent teaching job.
She d started after Labor Day, teaching a special education class with kindergarten-aged
autistic children. It kept her busy during the day, but nights without Travis killed her.
Her heart ached, her body needing to feel his again deep inside her.
She plopped down on the sand, zipping up her sweatshirt, placing the hood over
her head. The cool breeze signaled summer s hold on Mother Nature would soon be gone.
A shadow fell over her. She looked up, but the sun s rays blinded her for just a
minute. When her eyes adjusted, she thought she saw Travis tall form.
The figure dropped a white plastic bag in her lap. She shot up from the sand,
dumping the bag.
Travis? She whispered. Wh-what are you doing here? Her heart raced. I
thought you left. Derek said you were moving out of state.
He shoved his hands in his pockets. As I was boarding the plane, I got to thinking
about what you said about being a coward.
She swallowed. Hard. Tears threatened.
She had to be tough.
She was only a distraction, after all.
I figured I could run away, and put everything behind me and start over. Funny
thing was, I found I couldn t start over. Not unless I had you.
Her voice wobbled. You said I was a distraction.
God help me, I thought if I could make you believe that, then bringing in
Sanchez would be easier. I wouldn t have you on my conscience. But now I realize you are
my conscience.
 I am? Hope bloomed.
You re the very air I need to breathe.
Travis! She leaped at him, throwing her arms around his neck.
I can t make a fresh start without you. Will you do that with me?
She smiled at him. No more lies.
He grinned back. No more. He sobered then slipped his hands inside her shorts
to feel the smooth, silky material of panties. You re not going commando?
 Only for you, remember?
She ran behind a dune on the deserted beach, laughter bubbling up inside her.
What are you doing? He shouted.
Now that you re back, they re coming off!
She tossed the panties in the air, over the dune. The wind caught them, blowing
them out across the ocean.
She came out from behind the dune and joined him by the water.
Jenna. He drew out her full name. He cupped her bottom leaning his forehead
against hers. I missed you so much.
He handed her the bag she dropped in the sand earlier.
What s in there? She frowned.
 Open it.
She did. Inside, there were cubes of different colored sticky notes of all shapes and
sizes.
She drew out one pad and read the first note. I love you, Jenna Grayson. Then
she read the note under that, and the note under that one&
Each of the two hundred notes had the same message.
She took out the other pads of notes all bearing the same message on each page.
Her eyes widened. How long did it take you to do this?
Days. He shook his head. But now, you ll never forget that I love you. He
glanced her way. Do you love me?
Travis, she rained kisses on his face. I fell in love with you the minute I saw
you.
He smiled. The day you started&
